For those of you looking for a more extreme walk, then the annual Boundary Walk will certainly fit the bill. The event is organised on the first Saturday of July every year to raise money for the local school and church. It covers 30 miles and involves 10,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 feet of ascent with over 24 fells tops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including Helvellyn and Place Fell. Of course you can attempt the route at any time of the year. The start is at Glencoyne Bay on the western side of Ullswater and goes via Helvellyn to the top of Kirkstone pass (the half way point) across to High Street and back to Patterdale via Place Fell. If you are interested in the walk then you and your pet would be very welcome. Full details can be found on the Patterdale Parish Boundary Walk website.
Helvellyn - 7.5 miles - Moderate to Hard
The Lake District provides some of the most breathtaking scenery in England,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the mix of fells and lakes offering a stunning array of vistas and views. One of the most popular destinations is around Ullswater,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the east of the Lake District. Often called England’s most beautiful lake, and framed by Helvellyn in the west and Place Fell and High Street in the east,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ullswater is a great place for walking, both for you and your dog. The great thing about the area for dog walkers is that much of the countryside is open fell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], owned mainly by the National Trust, and so you and your pet are free to roam wild.
Helvellyn is England’s third most highest mountain, and is the “must do” walk for anyone staying in the area. There are various routes up directly from Patterdale, with the most popular being the ascent via the Grisedale Valley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to “Hole in the Wall”,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along the famous Striding Edge to the summit, and then back down via Swirral Edge and Red Tarn and down to Glenridding and Patterdale. As you ascend to Hole in the Wall don’t forget to look behind you as the views across to High Street are fantastic. Please be careful on Striding Edge itself – there is a path on the north side of the ridge. Red Tarn will provide a welcome spot for swimming for your dog – and even you if you can brave the cold!
Whilst the area offers ample opportunity to walk your dog off the lead please make sure that you keep your pet under control at all times. There are literally thousands of sheep grazing on the fells and you should take especial care during the lambing season which runs from March to May. Also watch out for cows who graze from the spring until the autumn often on the open fell. The trick with cows is to be confident and keep walking – never stop or back away! If you let your dog off the lead they will usually find a way around the cows and rejoin you further along the path. Finally Ullswater is home to many roe and red deer, especially on the eastern side of the valley. If you’re lucky enough to be there in the autumn listen out for the male stags rutting calls!
Hopefully this article would have inspired you to visit the area around Ullswater. To make it even more appealing to you and your pets then the local pub, The White Lion, and even the local village store and post office are all exceptionally pet friendly. There are also a great range of pet friendly Ullswater Holiday Cottages available in the area.
Angle Tarn is a magical spot to the south east of Ullswater. It is easily accessible via the main path to Boredale Hause above Patterdale. The light on the water has an almost magical quality and every time you go there it looks more beautiful! There are often Canadian Geese on the tarn and this can provide another welcome distraction for your dog! You can either return via the lower path or come back over the Angle Tarn Pikes, from the top of which you get some great views north towards Ullswater and South towards Brotherswater and Kirkstone.
Place Fell is on the eastern side of Ullswater. The usual ascent is from Patterdale via Boredale Hause. The path has recently been improved and so (although steep) provides firm footing all the way to the summit ridge. This ridge also provides various peat bog pools, which can be ideal wallowing spots for your dog. Be warned that the summit can be a little blowy when the wind is up and again is a popular spot for grazing sheep! You can then descend either the same way or come down Kilbert How or even down towards Howtown – with the option of taking the famous Ullswater Steamer (also pet friendly) back to Glenridding.
Place Fell - 5 miles - Moderate to Hard
Angle Tarn - 5 miles - Moderate
Silver Point walk - 3.8 miles - Easy to Moderate
Here are 5 top walks to consider. All the distances are measured from a starting point in Patterdale at the southern end of Ullswater. All these walks can be easily identified on the Ordnance Survey OL5 explorer map,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Silver point is on the eastern side of Ullswater opposite Glenridding. It can be reached either by a low level path through Side Farm and along the Lake Shore or via a higher path. It is a beautiful walk at any time of day but especially in the afternoons with the sun shining down on, and offers simply stunning views all the way along down to Ullswater and across the lake to Helvellyn and her surrounding fells. Make sure you take the time to go to the “beach” at Silver Point – an ideal spot for a picnic in the summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and dog paddling at all times of the year!

Each of us has what is called a "set point" weight. In other words, it is a genetically determined weight that our body tries to maintain, whether it is by dictating the appetite we have, or the foods we tend to crave, our bodies are pretty good at regulating our eating habits and our individual metabolisms to achieve that set point. There have even been studies of children who are adopted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which have shown similar results since the adopted kid's weight was more akin to their biological parents than to their adoptive parents.
When we consider this, how can the concept of a "set point" weight always be true? Would nature determine that a man or woman should be morbidly obese, or is this a perversion of a more pure form of the set point theory, that is due to the lack of nutrition education and increasingly poor diets due to a lack of availability of nutritious foods to certain parts of the population?

Most people notice that they feel their best, and at their peak performance, when they are at a certain weight. For me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that "magic" number is 115 lbs to 120 lbs. I notice that if I go over this weight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I start to feel lethargic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "flabby", and less able to focus. So, does this mean that the theory we are all biologically predetermined to weight a certain amount is true?
It is speculated by the scientific community that every one of us is subject to this genetically predetermined weight range, which is said to be dependent on the number of fat cells a person has by the end of their first year of life. Of course, how much we eat, the fat content of our diet, the amount of calories we take in regularly and our level of physical activity all impact how large those fat cells will get, and thus how "large" we will be, but we do pretty much start life off with this predetermined amount of fat cells.
This would mean that even the strictest dieters may have a very hard time losing weight if they are currently in their "set point" weight range, because the body will constantly combat any sort of responsive weight loss by slowing the metabolism down. What this means is the body metabolizes the food more slowly, or more quickly, depending on the set point goal, whether it needs to go up to achieve it's set point, or down.
Well, I'm not enough of a scientist to speculate on that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but what I can tell you is that there are just too many advanced methods to lose weight and keep it off to allow for the rampant amounts of obesity that are currently prevalent today. What we must do is re-coach our bodies to get to a new "set point", and the answer to this is not gastric bypass,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but nutrition guidance and education. As with everything else in this world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], education and moderation is the key.
Obesity is measured by the Body Mass Index, or BMI,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is a measurement of body fat that is based on an inidvidual's height and weight. Now, based on the concept of BMI, more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight, obese,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or morbidly obese, meaning that their health may be at great risk, simply from carrying too much weight and putting stress on their organs. Generally a BMI of 19 to 25 is an indicator of what is considered a healthy weight.
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some scientific data and logical conclusions made by scientists do point to the fact that we have a genetically and biologically predetermined weight that we are supposed to carry, and this set weight depends on a number of factors, number one being good old mom and dad - AKA genetics. It has been proven by shear observation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and medical evidence that most individuals are about 65% likely to be in the same weight range as their family members are. Are there anomolies to this fact? Of course, there always are, but it's a pretty good chance that the apple will not fall far from the tree, weight wise.
The fact is, today there are an alarming number of cases of obesity in the United States. So much so that many Americans have gotten the dangerous "tummy reducing" surgery gastric bypass, in an effort to cheat nature, and lose the weight that nature will not allow them too. Still yet, an alarming number of those people eat there way right around the surgery and still gain the weight back.

I know every one of my readers has experienced the joy of eating ice cream only to be suddenly hit with a brain freeze, mind-numbing headache. Am I right? Well, let's look at what causes brain freeze and what you can do to make it go away.
None of us would ever stop enjoying cold foods or drinks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so here are some ideas to avoid brain freeze.
Avoiding Brain Freeze Headaches
The cold substance touches the palate (roof) of the mouth. The capillaries inside the palate become frozen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which triggers the blood vessels to constrict in an attempt to maintain bodily heat. Once you swallow the ice cream, the palate starts to warm up again, which causes the blood vessels to expand. If this expansion/contraction occurs repeatedly in rapid succession,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pain receptors are released and this is what causes brain freeze pain, because the pain response is carried to the brain along the trigeminal nerve. This nerve’s key job is detecting facial pain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so the brain thinks the pain is coming from the forehead instead of the mouth. Brain freeze!

It’s caused when the ice cream touches the roof of your mouth causing the nerves there to expand and contract. This happens more frequently when you eat the ice cream too quickly. The medical reaction causing the pain is very similar to migraine headache pain.

In this second article, we continue with 6 more critical or major tests you should address if you really want to know what is going on with your thyroid and adrenal glands. Again for food allergies, if you have one or two of the common food allergens such as gluten or casein you may want to consider a whole panel, because often with leaky gut there may be other foods that have caused problems and you have become allergic to them. Several companies, including Bio-Tek will do 96 different food allergens by IGG from just several drops of blood and you can even do this test at home – just a finger stick and put a drop of blood on a little card, dry it and send it off. So it is a fabulous way to get a very complete analysis, with minimal cost and time.

Other oils that are generally safe to use include,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lemon, sweet orange, mandarin, frankincense, lavender, sandalwood and tea tree.
This amount of caution is also required because the quality of essential oils can vary widely in the marketplace. But under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist, great benefits can be gained by using some essential oils during pregnancy.
In addition there are some oils which are usually to be avoided in the first trimester, particularly if there is a history or risk of miscarriage, such as roman chamomile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], geranium, lavender and rose.
Indigestion - dilute 1 drop of spearmint essential oil in 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil and massage into the abdomen in clockwise direction.
This information is meant as general advice. Please consult your health practitioner or a qualified aromatherapist for advice on your specific situation.
But why do some oils only become a risk during pregnancy? Well, some of these oils are emmenogogues and have a stimulating effect on the uterus. Some affect the hormones or have too strong an effect on a particular organ or system of the body. We also do not yet know to what extent oils used by the mother may affect the developing foetus, so any oils which may be too strong for the child should be avoided.
- Oils which are toxic or otherwise dangerous and should be avoided at all times, even when not pregnant. These include bitter almond, arnica, boldo, broom, buchu, calamus, brown & yellow camphor, cassia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chervil, cinnamon bark, costus, deertongue, elecampane,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bitter fennel, horseradish, jaborandi, melitotus, mugwort, mustard, oregano, pennyroyal, dwarf pine, rue, common sage, santolina,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sassafras, savin, southernwood, savory, tansy, thuja, tonka,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wintergreen, wormseed, wormwood.

- Commonly used oils which are normally safe but may have adverse effects when pregnant. These include angelica,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], basil, birch, calamintha, cedarwood, celery seed, citronella, clary sage, cypress, jasmine, labdanum, lovage, marjoram, melissa, myrrh, nutmeg, parsley, peppermint, rosemary, yarrow.

Never take essential oils internally. Always, but always, dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin. Never apply them neat to the skin. If you are pregnant, adapt any recipes by cutting down the number of drops to child sized doses, around half of that for an adult. This softens the effect and also takes account of the fact that when pregnant, a woman's sense of smell is often more acute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so full strength may seem overpowering. For example if a recipe suggests 5 drops in 10 mls of carrier oil, then use only 2-3 drops. Less is often more in aromatherapy!

People get very concerned about the use of aromatherapy and essential oils during pregnancy. Some, including some aromatherapists, even advise not to use any essential oils at all. I personally think that is a bit extreme, and also a great pity, as many essential oils can be quite useful in helping the prospective mum through this time.
If you have a personal or family history of miscarriage or your have been advised that your pregnancy is in any way fragile, please seek advice from a professional aromatherapist regarding your particular situation before using essential oils. Professional advice is a good idea for anyone contemplating the use of aromatherapy but especially so in pregnancy. And always let your health practitioner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doctor, midwife or obstetrician know about anything you are using or proposing to use.
Essential oils used in vaporiser will carry much less risk than any applied directly to the body, whether in a carrier oil, in a bath or as a compress. But still err on the side of caution regarding how much you use.
Some useful and safe remedies for pregnancy -
The first category should always be avoided, but in the main are not readily available anyway. The second should only be considered under the advice of a professionally qualified aromatherapist and generally used in very limited amounts and/or for a limited period of time.
There are a number of reasons that the area of aromatherapy and pregnancy has become the subject of so much concern. And often people are left not knowing what, if anything they can use.

And, speaking of your beach bag, what should you have in it? How about some extra sunscreen (because you are already covered – but you need to reapply),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], towel, a good book, water bottle, lip gloss, snacks, and flip flops for around the pool. If you are planning on changing after the pool, you can bring a change of clothes; though I don’t recommend this unless absolutely necessary. If there is any way possible to stop home for a quick shower, or at the very least a wipe down and then change your clothes, that is the way to go. You will feel much better. And deodorant doesn’t carry well in the heat!
Dry brush your body from toes to head (yes, in that order). There are several good reasons for this. First – it removes dead skin, and makes your skin look less ashy, flaky, and dry. Second – it helps your lymphatic system work, which keeps everything moving well. Third, it helps prepare your skin for the next tip – sunless tanning lotion.
Nothing quite covers flaws better than a good self-tanner (see my review on self-tanners). These have improved soooo much. They used to make your skin look very orange and unnatural. Not anymore! Self-tanners make you look thinner, healthier, and cover a multitude of sins (lumps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bumps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cellulite, and spider veins – sounds familiar?). But, the dry brushing step is important to make an even application easier. And, ALWAYS wash your hands well after applying. If they are looking at us (after all that I have told you above), it is simply because they like the way you look and/or wish they could carry themselves the way you do. Besides, you are there to enjoy the sunshine and water. Have FUN!!!
6.Big thighs; a skirted bathing suit – but PLEASE, make it a small skirt. There is nothing more aging than a suit that looks like a dress!
3.Little breasts; Padding, rouching, ornamentation, draping of any kind will help.
5.Long torso; Helllooo tankini! The long top balances your long torso. I love, love, love these!
